Parker had tried to ride his bike to Grandma’s house to go swimming with Lande, our sitter. He fell off his bike on the way there and scrapped up his knee and elbow, and scuffed his hand. I had to run after them and get him cleaned up and fetch the bicycles. After getting him all settled and bandaged it was almost time to prepare for dinner and to leave for VBS.
Since I was teaching VBS, I needed to leave early to arrange my classroom and get organized. Barry would drop Parker off later. VBS was fun and very entertaining as always. Once it was over, Parker and I were just going to walk home and I would walk my bike too. He complained a little about walking and I offered to call his father to come get him. Then it dawned on me we might be able to ride double on my bike [bad idea!].
I had him sit on my bike seat holding my shoulder, while I stood on the foot pegs and pedaled. It was working until my bike came to a screeching halt! Parker’s foot was mangled in the spokes and bike frame. Instant adrenaline!
I tried reversing the direction of the tire to release his foot. He is screaming! And I am realizing - This is not working! A neighbor came to help. I then remembered that my tires have a release mechanism to remove the tire to transport the bike. This freed the foot and we were able to get in the neighbors car and go home. We decided a trip to the ER was necessary and we drove to the hospital. I feel horrible for suggesting we ride double on my bike.
An X-ray and radiologist report confirmed that Parker broke the very tip of his big toe! His first broken bone, but I am very thankful it was just the tip of his toe injured and not the entire foot.

Easter
I realize it has been a while since I've blogged last, I have been busy with Grad classes but it was important to me to get this in because we probably only have one more year of Parker believing in Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny so here goes...
Parker decided last year that he was too old to go to the Egg Hunt in town. He was 7 at the time and I was thinking - Are You Crazy? Its FREE c-a-n-d-y and you love candy!
But this year was different, he was ready to go and dominate that hunt! Talking smack about all the candy he was going to get because he is "faster than all the other kids." He did very well at taking is share and doing his part at that hunt.
The next morning was Easter and before bedtime he wanted me to put carrots on a plate to leave for the Easter Bunny. By midnight I was done preparing his basket and nibbled on carrots as if a bunny might do. I left little nubs of carrots on the plate.
The next morning he came downstairs to see his Easter Basket and he looked at the nubs of carrots and put his nose down there at the plate and took a sniff...
"Yep, smells like rabbit breath!!", he explained. I smiled and laughed and then thought, some of the craziest people in the world are 8 year old boys.

The Tooth Fairy's First Visit
Parker's baby teeth are being very stubborn. They do not want to come out...so the permanent teeth are coming in behind. This is creating a "crowded" situation, so the dentist wants to pull 4 baby teeth to make room for the 2 bigger permanent teeth.
On the day of his appointment, I went to his school to pick him up and he was very excited because one of the teeth which had been loose for some time, was about to make its way out. He had bit into something at lunchtime and it really loosened the tooth.
I told him to try to wiggle it loose on the way to the dentist. On his third attempt, the tooth just popped out in his hand. His face was filled with instant shock and then surprise!! He was so happy to have it finally free. And I was so happy that his first tooth loss would be "natural" and I was there to see it. I hated to think of him loosing his first teeth by the dentist pulling them out.
When we arrived at the dentist office to extract the other 3 teeth, the office personnel kidded him about taking the other teeth out on his own. They were not ready however.
Parker was such a trooper!! He complained a bit about the shot pinching...but when it was over he seemed fine. He was even ready for flag football practice that night! We celebrated over Buckeye Parfaits!
Later that night, once Parker was asleep...the Tooth Fairy arrived. :)
At 4a.m., Parker awoke and came into our bedroom and said, "Mom, the tooth fairy didn't come." I knew that she had but I had to get him to figure this out. I asked if he was sure she didn't come and if the teeth were gone? He shook the container and it did not sound as if teeth were rattling inside. Then it dawned of him that the fairy may have took the teeth out and left something inside the container for him. So he opened it and took out what he thought was a one dollar bill. He said, "Oh man, its only a dollar." I said, "Well, that was hardly worth it, was it?" Then he moved closer to the window where the light was coming in from outside and he jumped with glee and said, "No! Mom! It's a ten dollar bill!!!" He was so excited to be rich!

Responsibility
Parker was busy...being his normal self. Always getting one toy out and then another. I thought maybe this would be a good lesson in Responsibility for this soon to be 7 year old.
He had just played Wii and decided to get out his DS and play that. So I asked him to please put the Wii stuff away before getting all the DS stuff out. He put his DS and stylus on the ottoman and put the Wii stuff away. When he returned to the DS...the stylus was gone. This particular stylus was one of three that were recently purchased and he thought that his solution to the problem was going to be opening another one still in the package.
Wrong, Mom stepped in and said, "You need to find the one that you were just using." This turned into a 20 minute task. We moved couch cushions, pillows, blankets, and the ottoman. No stylus. This is when I decided to preach about putting things back where they belong so that you can find them easily. [Wasted breath, I'm sure!]
I had asked him where the flexible stylus was and he said that it was in my car. He proceeded to go out into the garage to look in my car. Meanwhile, I decided to retrace his steps and look in the cabinet with the Wii collection to see if he mistakenly left it in there and I found it.
Parker had returned with the flexible stylus and now nothing was missing. Everything had been found and all was right with the world...so we thought!
We were approaching bedtime so we decided to carry out the normal routine. Change clothes, brush teeth, etc. I usually ask Parker at bedtime what his favorite part of the day was. And while he was responding I fell asleep. I slept for 2 and a half hours and woke up to go to my own bed, all the while thinking I should let Chuck, our dog, outside so I won't have to do it again later. But I didn't and went back to sleep.
The next morning, I couldn't find Chuck anywhere. He wasn't in Parker's room. He wasn't downstairs. Then it dawned on me, he loves to ride in the car...perhaps he climbed in the car when Parker was on a stylus hunt. So I went to the garage and found Chuck in the car, the cold car. He slept in my car all night. This is not all he did, he did his business in my car!! Uhg! It took me 30 mins to clean it out.
It just so happened that this day my husband and I had to swap vehicles so that I could have his vehicle serviced. My husband and I drove to work and then later in the day I received and email:
Barry: "Did you fart in the car, it smells like shit!" Oh, Responsibility is tough lesson for us all!

Lunch & Snake Eyes Halloween scare
On this particular week, I had a very busy agenda. I was feeling like my role at home was lacking and I was missing out...so I knew how to make things better....I'll surprise Parker!
My work schedule required me to work 3pm - 11pm on this particular day...so I had lots of time to meet Parker at school for lunch and run errands afterwards. I arrived at school just after 11am to "Line Up" with the class of 1st graders and Parker. [Feeling like a kid again]. Off we went to the cafeteria and it was spaghetti day!
Parker was really quiet, I was trying to get him to talk a bit. He seemed distracted. When lunch is officially about to be over, a teacher will flip a card and the children can go to recess if they are finished with their lunch. Once this took place, 4 boys came over to our table and began to leave the cafeteria. Parker picked up his tray and told me he was going to recess and followed that group of boys. I told him that he barely touched his food, maybe we should eat some more. And he said, "Bye Mom, I'm going to recess!". I sat there and could not believe he just left me! I realized I could not compete with recess. :)
After lunch, I went and ran errands. I had purchased a Snake Eyes costume for Parker to wear at Halloween. It was the exact costume he wanted and just the right size!! And I looked forward to talking with him on the phone later as I worked and I would let him know that I had a surprise for him! He gave me specific instructions to lay the costume in his room when I arrived home after 11pm. And he also told me to wake him up earlier the next morning so that he would have time to try on his new costume. After work, I arrived home and laid out the costume knowing how excited he would be in the morning.
Around 3am he tried his costume on and stood beside me at my bed saying, "Mom, is it too early to wake up and try my costume on?". Having been a tiny bit awake and seeing this black mask in my face...I freaked out!! Ahhhhh!
Needless to say, I was wide awake at that point.

G. I. Joe Mania
Parker told me last night that he wanted up early in the morning so that he and I could play g.i. Joe before school. He then asked if I would wake him when I got up so we had time to play this game. "No problem", I said.
After he got around for the day, he was still waiting on me to get ready. I told him I needed to dry my hair and I had to be beautiful before I could play. He went to my closet and picked out an orange shirt and said, "Mom, you will look beautiful in this!". My heart just melted! And I responded, "Okay, I'll just pick out a skirt to go with that and after I get dressed I'll be ready to play G.I. Joe". He went back to my closet and picked out a skirt. Surprisingly the outfit matched really well and I was ready in no time!
Parker's games are not always games that I relate to. I fumble around not knowing really who I am or what I am supposed to be doing as this character from G.I. Joe, but I do know how important it is to Parker to play these games, especially on days when he will pick out my clothes for me!

Sonic

We took Parker to the new "Sonic" Drive-in restaurant in our area. Even though the idea of fast food doesn't appeal to me that much, I wanted Parker to experience a Drive-in restaurant like we used to frequent when I was a kid. We had an A & W Rootbeer stand in Michigan where I lived with my parents growing up.
We pulled in the driveway and spotted a bay for our car and Parker could see the wait staff delivering food to people on rollerskates. He said, "Mom, this isn't Sonic, It's the Flintstones!"
"That girl is carrying food on skates just like Betty Rubble."
He really thought we were in some sort of Bed Rock restaurant and the waitress was going to dump a giant shell on the side of the car!! The food was tasty and it was so much fun!
